Packing will be the most involving task in your preparations for moving, but unfortunately, you can't avoid it. For this reason, you will want to gather the necessary equipment and materials for the process. Boxes or cartons are the most fundamental packing equipment you will use. However, packing these boxes does not just involve stuffing things in them; there are right and wrong ways of doing this. Therefore, to make your moving a success, here are some best practices you should consider when packing your boxes.

Use High Quality Packing Boxes

You need to use new and high quality boxes that are designed specifically for moving. You will of course find a wide range for different household items in your home, but make sure you avoid old boxes that you used in your previous move because they may not withstand the weight of your items due to possible previous wear and tear. However, if you feel your previous boxes are still in a good condition and may work just fine, have the bottom of such boxes reinforced well with packing tape.

Prepare the Boxes and Maximise Space

Before you pack your boxes, add some wadded paper at the bottom for padding. Heavier items should be placed at the bottom, followed by the lighter ones and finally the more fragile. To maximise space and ensure that everything is packed well, load things such as books and plates vertically in the packing boxes.

Do not overload the Boxes

Putting too many items in a packing box that the box can't even be lifted is a bad idea because the box will simply collapse. For this reason, if you have items such as too many books, have them loaded in smaller and medium boxes and use as many boxes as possible to reduce the weight on each one of them.

Fill Your Boxes Completely

Don't leave any elbow room for in your packing boxes by making sure no box is half filled. Boxes that are not filled completely will allow the items inside to shift during transit and even break, especially if they are more fragile. Therefore, if you can hear rattling sounds inside the box when you carry or shake it, then it's not filled completely. In such case, you have to jam any empty spaces in the box with things such bubble wrap, clothing or dishtowels. These materials will also add support.
